R&D Mechanical Technical Specialist
Location: Waltham, MA | Fully Onsite
Industry: Advanced Robotics & Engineering
Type: Full-time | Contract
Pay: $35-$45/hr

Ardent Staffing is seeking an experienced R&D Mechanical Technical Specialist to join an innovative team pushing the limits of robotic development. This role is hands-on and fast-paced — perfect for someone who thrives in prototype environments and has experience with high-precision electromechanical systems.
As a key contributor on a cross-functional robotics team, you’ll work on dense integrations, gearboxes, actuators, and complex mechanical assemblies. You’ll troubleshoot, test, and iterate on custom builds — helping bring cutting-edge mechanical designs from concept to execution.
Key Responsibilities
  • Assemble and support prototype mechanical systems, including actuators, linkages, and structural components.
  • Independently plan and execute test procedures, troubleshoot problems, and provide feedback to design engineers.
  • Develop assembly documentation and define work instructions to improve repeatability and accuracy.
  • Design and build custom fixtures or tooling using CAD (SolidWorks, CATIA, etc.).
  • Recommend design modifications to improve part function or manufacturability.
  • Collaborate directly with engineers to improve designs and support transition from prototype to production.
  • Coordinate workspace layout, tools, and lab infrastructure to support build goals.
Required Skills & Experience
  • 6+ years of hands-on mechanical experience in robotics, automotive, motorsports, aerospace, or similar industries.
  • Strong background in assembling, testing, and servicing complex mechanical and electro-mechanical systems.
  • Capable of developing tooling and processes for first-article builds with minimal direction.
  • Proficient with CAD tools (SolidWorks or CATIA) — particularly for reviewing assemblies and designing fixtures.
  • Highly organized with excellent attention to detail.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and ability to prioritize in a fast-changing environment.
  • Team-oriented and adaptable to shifting priorities.
  • Willingness to work extended hours when needed to meet key deadlines.
Nice to Have
  • Experience in cable routing and prototype cable assembly (soldering, crimping, overmolding).
  • Basic fabrication skills (welding, machining, etc.).
  • Familiarity with electrical systems or PCB assemblies.
This is a unique opportunity to work at the cutting edge of robotics innovation, contributing directly to the development of new mechanical systems that shape the future of automation.
Apply today with Ardent Staffing — where we connect top technical talent with opportunities to make real impact.
